mallowdoos at Cucalorus

In 2019, we were incredibly fortunate to work with the team at Cassian Films to create the above video for the 10x10 Challenge at Cucalorus. Highly recommend them for any and all creative film needs!

Our Story

The story of mallowdoos begins one week before Christmas, 2017. My mom and I have always had a friendly competition when it comes to baking. She tries a new recipe, nails it… and then I steal it and try to make it better. It doesn’t always work…That year, I wanted to try and make something she wouldn’t dare to try - candy making scares her.

I found a recipe for marshmallows from my friend, Alton Brown. He doesn’t know we’re friends yet, but that’s beside the point. He had even put up a video to show just how easy they were to make.

The first batch… was awful. The second batch, not as awful. I had already told my mom and brothers (the real candy lovers in my family) that marshmallows would be part of our Christmas dessert spread - I couldn’t give up! I kept trying - experimenting - my entire kitchen was encased in a fog of powdered sugar for the entire week. By Christmas, they were pretty ok.

I kept playing with the recipe into January, February - adding a bit more sugar, mixing a little longer, a little less, changing up the quality of the ingredients. In March, my older brother tried a new flavor - lemon chiffon - and said, “You have to stop making these, or start selling them,” as he reached for another one. And that is how mallowdoos was born.
